Description - The Airfields and Pavements Branch (APB) of the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), Vicksburg, MS, is the lead Department of Defense (DOD) agency responsible for airfield and pavement research. As part of a “SMART Runway” i nitiative, APB-ERDC made use of an existing DOD airfield pavement construction project to incorporate advanced sensors into a model segment of pavement that enabled ERDC to monitor the pavement response and damage accumulation over time with critical military aircraft systems.
