TENDER NOTICE FOR Integration & Social Inclusion of Waste Workers in Prayagraj, UP& Port Blair, ANI Background: Effective waste management is essential to safeguarding public health and sanitation, protecting the environment, and improving resource efficiency. Solid Waste Management (SWM) is one among the basic essential services provided by municipal authorities in the country to keep urban centres clean. However, it remains a challenge due to limited financial, physical and human resources. In countries and cities where formal waste management systems are underdeveloped, informal waste pickers have long played a key role in collecting, sorting and recycling waste. Waste pickers make significant contributions to public health, sanitation, and environment at local, national and international levels by promoting resource circulation and reducing the amount of landfill. Informal waste recyclers (waste pickers and informal waste collectors) constitute 1% of urban population in developing nations as per the World Bank. But as an occupational group, waste pickers have been relegated to the bottom of the recycling sector pyramid. However, for the urban poor with limited education and formal skill sets, waste picking has emerged as one of the most accessible means of livelihood. It is estimated that the 1.5 to 4 million waste pickers in the country are responsible for recycling almost 20 percent of the country’s wastes. Waste picking is often the only source of income for families, providing livelihood for significant numbers of urban poor and usable materials to other enterprises. Waste pickers also collect organic waste for composting and biogas generation thereby, making a significant contribution by keeping cities clean. Objectives: The overall objective is to assist in implementing a project aimed at improving the socio-economic conditions of waste pickers in the Prayagraj Nagar Nigam & Port Blair Municipal Council Area.
