Description - Description: Stadtwerke Düsseldorf is exploring the potential of deep geothermal energy to provide heat. The central element of the exploration is a two-phase exploratory drilling in the north of Düsseldorf. First, a vertical borehole will be drill ed down to the base of the mass limestone at a depth of around 1600 m in order to collect geological, hydraulic and hydrochemical data. Since the relevant permeabilities are tied to fissures, faults and karst zones, which will probably be missed by a vertical drilling due to their dip, a sidetrack should be carried out in a directly subsequent phase two.
