Economy of Azerbaijan

The economy of Azerbaijan is highly dependent on oil and gas exports. Large oil reserves are a major contributor to Azerbaijan's economy. Gas and oil make up two-thirds of Azerbaijan's GDP, making it one of the top ten most fossil fuel-dependent economies in the world. Azerbaijan's economy is characterized by corruption and inequality. The country's oil wealth has significantly strengthened the stability of Ilham Aliyev's regime and enriched ruling elites in Azerbaijan. The national currency is the Azerbaijani manat. The private sector is weak in Azerbaijan, as the economy is dominated by state-owned enterprises. More than half of the formal labor force works for the government in Azerbaijan.

Top Sectors in Azerbaijan

Agriculture in Azerbaijan

Agriculture in Azerbaijan is significant, with the country boasting the largest agricultural basin in the region covering 54.9 percent of its territory. Research institutes in Azerbaijan focus on various agricultural aspects including meadows, pastures, horticulture, subtropical crops, vegetables, viticulture, wine-making, cotton growing, and medicinal plants. Certain regions are suitable for growing grains, potatoes, sugar beets, cotton, and tobacco. Livestock, dairy products, and wine and spirits also contribute significantly to farm output. Additionally, the Caspian fishing industry concentrates on sturgeon and beluga stocks.

Manufacturing in Azerbaijan

Diversification of the Azerbaijani economy into manufacturing industries remains a challenge as the mining and hydrocarbon sectors dominate, accounting for well over 95 percent of the economy. The defense industry in Azerbaijan is developing independently, with collaborations with defense sectors in Ukraine, Belarus, and Pakistan. There are plans for joint production of military equipment including grenade launchers, MLRS systems, and vehicles.

Banking in Azerbaijan

The banking sector in Azerbaijan is relatively small compared to the overall economy.

Communications in Azerbaijan

The telecommunications sector in Azerbaijan is marred by allegations of corruption. President Ilham Aliyev and his family reportedly own major mobile providers through offshore companies, potentially controlling a significant portion of the market. Ownership of these mobile providers allows for extensive monitoring of communications.

Tourism in Azerbaijan

Tourism is a priority for the Azerbaijani government, aiming to develop the country as an elite tourist destination and a major contributor to the economy. The State Tourism Agency and Ministry of Culture regulate tourism activities, with initiatives like hosting the Formula One Grand Prix in Baku to attract visitors.

Azerbaijan - Key Economic Indicators

Exports and Imports

Azerbaijan's economy relies heavily on exports, particularly oil and gas, which account for over 90% of its export revenue. Other exports include chemicals, machinery, and agricultural products like grapes. They import machinery, food (especially meat and dairy), and iron and steel.

Balance of Trade

Thanks to strong oil and gas exports, Azerbaijan enjoys a positive trade balance. In 2022, the nominal GDP was USD 78.7 billion, suggesting a surplus from exports. This surplus helps fund government spending and infrastructure projects.

Infrastructure Development

The government is investing heavily in improving transportation infrastructure, including expanding the national highway network. As of 2021, Azerbaijan boasts over 15,000 kilometers of roads. Other infrastructural projects include upgrades to railways, ports, and power grids.

Fiscal Policy

Azerbaijan's fiscal policy aims to balance government spending with revenue generation. Oil and gas exports are a major source of income, but the government is also working to diversify its tax base. In 2022, government revenue made up 32.18% of GDP, while expenditure was 26.21%.

Monetary Policy

The Central Bank of Azerbaijan manages the country's monetary policy, focusing on controlling inflation and maintaining a stable exchange rate for the Azerbaijani Manat (AZN). While recent inflation numbers aren't readily available, December 2022 saw an annual inflation rate of 2.1%, indicating successful control by the Central Bank.

Trade Agreements

Azerbaijan participates in several trade agreements, including its membership in the World Trade Organization (WTO) and trade deals with regional partners. These agreements help to facilitate trade and open new markets for Azerbaijani exports.

Environmental Regulations

While Azerbaijan's economy relies on oil and gas production, the government is introducing environmental regulations to address pollution concerns. These regulations aim to balance economic development with environmental protection.
